2. Problem Description:

When performing a MS Windows System or System State backup, the following error message is received in the backup report:

Info YYYY/MM/DD hh:mm Backup of system state failed [DD/MM/YYYY hh:mm]
  Info YYYY/MM/DD hh:mm  

Info YYYY/MM/DD hh:mm System writer is not found in the backup.
  Error YYYY/MM/DD hh:mm

[java.io.InterruptedIOException] Failed to generate the backup image of System State Backup

3. Cause:

This issue can occur if the VSS System writer is missing.

4. Resolution:

The System writer maybe missing because permissions to the files in the following directories are incorrect:

o    %windir%\winsxs\filemaps

o    %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames directories are incorrect

To confirm if the System writer is missing, please perform the following steps:

o    Confirm on the current VSS writers by a vssadmin list writers command.

o    Confirm if the following event can be found in the Event Viewer:

Level: Error
Description:
Backup started at ‘DD/MM/YYYY hh:mm:ss’ failed with following error code ‘2155348226’ (System writer is not found in the backup.). Please rerun backup once issue is resolved.

Event ID: 513
Level: Error
Description:
Cryptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object.Details:TraverseDir : Unable to FindFirstFile.System Error:Access is denied.

To correct the permission issue, type the following commands from an elevated command prompt:

>Takeown /f %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /a
>icacls %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /grant “NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(RX)”
>icacls %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /grant “NT Service\trustedinstaller:(F)”
>icacls %windir%\winsxs\temp\PendingRenames /grant BUILTIN\Users:(RX)

>Takeown /f %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\* /a
>icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant “NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(RX)”
>icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant “NT Service\trustedinstaller:(F)”
>icacls %windir%\winsxs\filemaps\*.* /grant BUILTIN\Users:(RX)

>net stop cryptsvc
>net start cryptsvc

Confirm on the VSS writers afterward by a vssadmin list writers command. Also, refer to the instruction provided in the following article if the problem persist:
